Webinar Summary

IV smart pumps are among the most widely used technologies in acute and critical care — yet many nurses report daily frustrations, safety concerns and usability issues that are not widely known. This webinar validates the real-world experiences of nurses by examining the mismatch between IV smart pump expectations and reality. Participants will explore how design limitations, alarm fatigue and infusion failures can undermine patient safety and increase nursing burden. Join nurse researchers from the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation as they share findings from their longstanding program of IV smart pump research. Learn how nurse-led research has uncovered critical flaws in pump design, and why the voices of nurses are essential for advancing infusion safety.

Objectives

  • Recognize common usability challenges and safety limitations of IV smart pumps in clinical practice
  • Explain how normalization of workarounds affects safety and workflow
  • Identify specific opportunities for nurses to influence technology decisions and drive improvements
